Acclaim for "Caractacus" recording
25th March 2019
A new recording of Elgar's oratorio Caractacus will be released on Hyperion on 29th March 2019. Featuring top British opera singers such as Roland Wood (in the title role), Christopher Purves, and Alistair Miles, Elizabeth sings the role of Caractacus' daughter, Eigen.
The recording is Editor's Choice
in the April issue of Gramphone Magazine:
"Elizabeth Llewellyn lends some lyrical respite to much of the forceful rhetoric of the work’s warrior spirit, one abundantly supplied by Caractacus’ impetuous son, Orbin, played by Elgan Llyr Thomas. Both are also passionately equal to Elgar’s enthralling love duet in scene 3, a section that avidly confirms the operatic character of this rich score." (Gramaphone)
"This [recording], with the Orchestra of Opera North and the Huddersfield Choral Society under the impassioned baton of Martyn Brabbins, is truly excellent. It’s good to hear Elizabeth Llewellyn, one of our foremost spinto sopranos, getting an opportunity to record a major role, as Eigen. " (David Mellor, Classic FM)
"...a magisterial new recording is out next week from Hyperion, in which Martyn Brabbins conducts the Orchestra of Opera North and the Huddersfield Choral Society, with a fine array of soloists"
"Brabbins' account of Caractacus is vital and convincing in its orchestral playing, and there are superb vocal contributions from the soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn as Eigen and Roland Wood as Caractacus himself."
This recording is Presto Classical's
"Recording of the Week".
"...soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn in the role of Caractacus's daughter, Eigen, is sublime as she waits for the arrival of her lover, Orbin..." (Presto Classical)
